European Hurling Championship 2015 - Round 1, Den Haag:

6 Dresden Hurlers travelled to Den Haag at the weekend to play the first round of the European Hurling Championship against teams from Viking Gaels (Stockholm, Malmo, Copenhagen, Gothenberg) Den Haag, Belgium and Amsterdam. Playing 9 a side, we were joined by 2 players from Cologne and 2 from Den Haag. Injury forced Andreas off in the 2nd game, so we were down to the bare bones in terms of playing numbers. There were some strong performances by our lads with Glen and Patrick scoring fine goals and Ken, Sebastian and Jakob firing over the points we kept fighting to the very end but over the course of the day, experience and fitness proved our undoing as we succumbed to stronger teams full with Irish born players. Photos from the event can be seen on our Dropbox and Facebook accounts in the coming days.

Congratulations to Den Haag who beat Amsterdam by 3 point in a keenly contested local final.

Gaelic Games in Dresden No. 2 - Report

On Saturday last March 28th, 41 players from many nations assembled on Ostragehege Sportspark Dresden to play a couple of hours of Gaelic Games. Prague Hibernians and Berlin Gaa arrived in town on a day of bright sunshine with two Gaelic Football teams to play each other in two evenly matched games. Experience held out though with the newly formed Berlin Gaa bravely succumbed to a strong and tightly knit Hibernians team who relied on their short passing game to get the job done.

Berlin and Prague then assembled a team of eager first timers and experienced Irish men to take the field against the hosts Dresden Hurling, who as it were, also fielded a relatively inexperienced team. But playing nine against nine on a wide open field gave everybody the time and space needed to perform and gain much needed match practice before the coming European Hurling tournament in Den Haag on April 18th. Played over two 25 minute games the scores poured in from both sides with long range points and fizzing shots on goal, Dresden just edged the first game before running out easy winners in the last game of the day against a jaded and weary visiting team.

In between both sets of games, a selection of players from all teams together with the Dresden Wolves Aussie rules team played an Aussie Rules demonstration match.

Many thanks to both Berlin and Prague for coming and to all our supporters who came to give their support! Also thanks to the Dresden Dukes for loaning us their nets for the day.

New Club Logo - Designed by Anna Korte

A big big thank you to Anna Korte for designing our new club logo. (Seen above) It’s a much improved and simplified crest from our previous one and will appear on our new club jerseys and media over the coming years. The design is a very pure and without the traditional squiggles, shapes, animals & city icons common on club logos. It clearly shows who we are, where we're from and what we do.

Go raibh mile maith agat Anna!

Social Event No.1: Ski weekend last week Czech

Last weekend we had high altitude pre-season training on the ski slopes across the border in Czech. Video footage of Frank “The Rock” Kahlenburg soloing the ball down the slopes while doing 360° turns at high speed without dropping the ball. Hope we see more of that on the grass in the next weeks. 13 people in total travelled for the weekend.
